Narrative Coaching

Meet Kelly

Kelly Harwood is a professional writer and Master Certified Life Coach. She has taught English and creative writing to adults and teens for over 20 years and earned her MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Kelly believes that life, like writing, is a creative act. To do it well, we must see ourselves as the protagonist of our own life stories.

Kelly’s coaching philosophy is rooted in collaboration, accountability, and the belief that small changes made consistently over time can lead to powerful change. She offers a range of coaching packages, including Short-Term Life Coaching, Narrative Coaching, Teen Coaching, and a 30-day Art and Writing as Meditation Class.

Therapeutic Narrative Coaching

Therapeutic Narrative Coaching works in concert with ongoing psychotherapy as a way of accessing and processing difficult life events.

Using narrative writing techniques and individualized coaching strategies, Kelly helps clients reframe and reclaim their life stories in ways that leave room for the messiness of life.

As a nonfiction writer and coach, Kelly knows first-hand the transformative power of narrative writing and the cathartic nature of speaking your truth.

When we write about our lives, we begin to see ourselves with more compassion and confidence. Perhaps especially when we write about failure, grief, and disappointment, we begin to recognize the limiting beliefs that keep us stuck and the unique strengths that have the power to carry us through hard times.

Therapeutic Narrative Coaching is an especially powerful tool for those processing trauma and grief. Kelly works directly with clients and their chosen mental health provider to create individualized writing prompts, outside readings, and additional resources.

Narrative Coaching Client Package

As a nonfiction writer and teacher, Kelly knows firsthand the transformative power of narrative writing and the cathartic benefits of speaking your truth.

When we write about our lives, we begin to see ourselves and others with compassion and find forgiveness in the messiness of our journey. Perhaps especially when we write about failure, grief, and disappointment, we begin to recognize the limiting beliefs that keep us stuck and the unique strengths that have the power to carry us through hard times.

Narrative coaching combines the literary techniques of nonfiction writing with the tenants of professional coaching, offering clients a new lens through which to view their lives and an invitation to cast themselves as active participants and creators.

Client writing will lead the way to deep discussion and reflection. Each week Kelly will offer personal writing exercises, short readings, and written feedback, helping clients reframe their life stories into mature and nuanced narratives.

Over time, clients will begin to recognize ongoing themes, outgrown identities, and new pathways toward growth. With new skills and a more accurate and empowered view of themselves, clients learn how to handle life’s ups and downs with the full arsenal of their individual strengths, values, and long-term goals.

Client Feedback

“ When I reflect on my time with Kelly, I remember how patient and attentive she was. One of her core gifts as a writer and as a coach is being an active listener. She easily connects the dots between your hidden intentions and your active behavior. She also summarizes this in an articulate way, and in a way that allows you to study your situation as a “third person” vs. a “first person” observer. Kelly is not afraid to nudge you if she notices that you are afraid to take action. I appreciate her wise counsel and encouragement as a coach
and would recommend working with her. ”
