Couples Intensive in Austin, TX
A couples intensive is a focused alternative to weekly therapy: two to four consecutive days working closely with one therapist on the challenge you’re facing, rather than an hour a week. Our couples intensives in Austin combine PACT, Relational Life Therapy, and the Gottman Method with hands-on practice.
We offer two intensives. Come Back to Me is for couples who feel disconnected and want to find their way back to each other. Begin Again is for couples healing after infidelity or betrayal. Both are described below, with sample schedules
How a Couples Intensive Differs From Weekly Couples Therapy
Weekly couples therapy builds change gradually, fifty minutes at a time, over months. A couples intensive compresses that into two to four full days, so you can go deep on one focused issue without stopping just as you reach something important.
Couples often choose an intensive when weekly therapy has stalled, when they’re in crisis and can’t wait months, or when they live outside Austin and want concentrated time instead of an ongoing weekly commitment. Some use it alongside their regular therapy to speed up work on one specific pattern. It’s a strong fit if you and your partner are both willing to do the work even when it’s uncomfortable, and if you want a dedicated block of time, away from daily distractions, to focus entirely on your relationship. If you’re not sure whether an intensive or weekly couples therapy is the better starting point, that’s a normal question to bring to a consultation. If your primary concern is trauma processing rather than the relationship dynamic itself, our EMDR intensives may also be worth a look.
Come Back to Me: A Couples Intensive for Rebuilding Connection
Many couples arrive feeling a quiet ache they have a hard time naming. You may feel like your partner does not really see you or hear you, and over time that can dim closeness and leave more distance in its place. The harder you try to bridge it, the more alone you can each feel. If this is where you are, please know that this kind of disconnection is something many loving couples go through, and the fact that you are seeking support says a great deal about how much your relationship still matters to you both.
In this intensive, we slow down and gently uncover the patterns that keep pulling you apart, the cycle that leaves you both feeling unseen. Together, using tools drawn from PACT, Relational Life Therapy, and the Gottman Method, you will begin to understand where each of you carries old pressure points and tender places, often rooted in earlier life and relationships, and how to speak to those places in one another with more compassion, kindness, and care. You will practice ways of communicating that invite closeness rather than defensiveness, learn to truly hear and reflect back what your partner is saying, and discover how your words and reactions land with each other so you are no longer setting off the same painful sparks again and again. You will also learn simple, practical ways to stay calm and steady and to care for your own nervous system, so hard conversations feel safer for you both.
The heart of this work is helping you move from feeling like two people at odds to feeling like a team again, living, as relationship expert Stan Tatkin describes it, in each other’s care. Over two to four days, you may begin to feel genuinely seen and understood, with new ways of being together that you can carry home and keep using. Many couples find that this focused, uninterrupted time helps them remember the closeness they have been missing, and gives them the everyday tools to protect it.
Begin Again: A Couples Intensive for Rebuilding Trust After Betrayal
When trust has been broken, the pain can feel enormous for both of you. The partner who was hurt may be living with waves of anxiety, fear, and images that will not quiet, while the partner who caused the hurt may be carrying deep shame and not knowing how to make things right. Both of these experiences are real and valid, and sitting in them together is some of the hardest work a couple can do. If you have decided you want to stay together and find your way back to one another, please know that healing is possible, and you do not have to find your way through it alone.
In this intensive, we begin by helping you both manage the trauma of what happened and create a sense of safety through transparency and non-defensiveness. You will learn what rigorous honesty looks like and how it slowly rebuilds trust, how to hold space for each other’s pain without becoming overwhelmed, and how to self-soothe the anxiety and fear on one side and the shame and discomfort on the other, so that you can stay present with each other rather than pulling away. Just as importantly, we look gently at the roots of what happened. Betrayal rarely comes out of nowhere. Often it grows in places where one or both partners were feeling unseen, unloved, disconnected, or were quietly struggling with their own sense of worth. By understanding what went unspoken and unaddressed before the betrayal, you can begin to heal not just the wound, but the relationship as a whole.
Over two to four days, we will also tend to the communication struggles and the quiet distances that may have been there long before, so that you are rebuilding something stronger rather than returning to what was. Many couples find that this concentrated time helps them move from crisis toward steadier ground, with a clearer understanding of one another and real tools for repair. Rebuilding trust is a journey that continues well beyond these two days, and this intensive is a safe, meaningful place to begin.
