What can I expect from EMDR therapy?

EMDR therapy is an interactive process that involves eight distinct phases.

During an EMDR session, we will work with you to identify a specific memory or experience that is causing distress. You’ll be asked to focus on this memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, which typically involves eye movements, but can also include tapping or auditory tones.

This bilateral stimulation helps to process the memory in a new way, reducing its emotional intensity and allowing you to develop a more adaptive understanding of the experience.

EMDR therapy has been extensively researched and proven effective in treating a wide range of conditions, such as PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, depression, and grief and loss.

While it was initially developed as a treatment for trauma, studies show that EMDR can also be very effective at treating issues surrounding self-worth or fear of abandonment, which may have their roots in negatively held beliefs.

The eight phases of EMDR therapy
  • History and planning: Your therapist will gather information about your history and develop a personalized treatment plan.
  • Preparation: You’ll learn about EMDR and develop coping skills to manage any distress that may arise during processing.
  • Assessment: Your therapist will help you identify a specific target memory and associated thoughts, feelings, and body sensations.
  • Desensitization: You’ll process the target memory using bilateral stimulation, allowing the emotional intensity to decrease.
  • Installation: You’ll focus on installing positive beliefs and resources related to the memory.
  • Body scan: You’ll check for any remaining physical tension or discomfort associated with the memory.
  • Closure: You’ll learn techniques to manage any distress that may arise between sessions.
  • Reevaluation: Your therapist will assess your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

EMDR intensive sessions

For those seeking a more accelerated approach to healing, Westlake Psychotherapy of Austin also offers EMDR intensives.

These involve extended sessions conducted over a shorter period, allowing for deeper immersion in the EMDR process and potentially faster progress. EMDR intensives can be a valuable option for individuals who are ready to commit to focused work and who may benefit from a condensed timeframe.
