Why Isn't Couples or Family Therapy Covered by Insurance?

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it is worth a clear explanation.

Insurance only reimburses therapy when a specific individual is being treated for a diagnosed mental health condition. Couples and family therapy works differently: the focus is on the relationship itself, not on diagnosing or treating one person. Because there is no individual patient with a billable diagnosis, most insurance plans classify couples and family sessions as non-covered services.

We do not accept insurance for couples or family counseling. Also, Superbills cannot be used for intensives. For clients who would like to pursue out-of-network reimbursement on their own, we are happy to provide a superbill. See below for details on how superbills work.

Out-of-Network Coverage & Superbills

Even if your clinician does not accept your insurance directly, you may be able to receive partial reimbursement from your insurance provider by submitting a superbill.

What Is a Superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt that includes your clinician’s license information, the date and type of service, diagnosis codes, and the fee you paid. You submit it to your insurance company, and they may reimburse a portion depending on your out-of-network benefits.

Within our client portal, SimplePractice prepares itemized Superbills at each month’s conclusion. With the exception of Michael, all of our practitioners provide these superbills for your convenience.

To find out whether your plan covers out-of-network mental health services, contact your insurance provider and ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and has it been met?
  • What percentage of the allowed amount does my plan cover per session?
  • How long do I have to submit a superbill after a session?

Please note:

Submitting a superbill requires providing your insurer with a mental health diagnosis. If privacy is a concern, paying fully out of pocket may be preferable. We are happy to talk through your options.

Session Lengths

Here is a quick reference for typical session formats:

  • Individual therapy: 50 minutes (standard)
  • EMDR sessions: We recommend booking 90 minutes to allow time for regulation work at the end of the session
  • Couples sessions: 50 minutes to two hours
  • EMDR Intensives: 6 hours per day (2-10 days)
  • Couples Intensives: 6 hours per day (2-4 days)

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged the full session fee. Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you, and late cancellations make it difficult to offer that time to another client.

If you are feeling sick or experiencing contagious symptoms, please request a Zoom session or cancel at least 24 hours in advance to protect the health of other clients and clinicians.

If you arrive late, your session will end at the originally scheduled time.

Each client (or couple, or group member) receives one emergency or illness-related late cancellation per calendar year at no charge. After that, the standard policy applies. If we can reschedule within the same week, we will try to accommodate you.

Intensive Session Fees / No Show & Late Cancelation

Sessions are booked in 6 hour segments and intensives are not covered by insurance. To reserve your time, a non-refundable payment for day 1 is due at the time of booking. This covers day one of your intensive. Payments will be made via your credit card, which will be charged for day 1 the day you complete your booking. The remainder of the fees will be charged on the days of service. Consider having the expected charges for your intensive sessions pre-authorized by your credit card company, as larger charges sometimes get denied due to safety protocols.

Services will not be rendered without payment in hand.

Because intensive session appointments are reserved exclusively for you and require a large amount of time (meaning we can’t book with any other clients during this time), we require the deposit for day 1 at the time of scheduling, with the remaining balance being due at the time of service.

All money paid is non-refundable.

We are reserving an entire day for you that we cannot otherwise fill. Please only reschedule if absolutely necessary. Cancellations that are received within less than a week of the intensive appointment, yield no refund or credit.

Good Faith Estimate

Under the No Surprises Act, clients who are uninsured or paying out of pocket have the right to receive a written estimate of expected charges at least one business day before their appointment. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you have the right to dispute it. Keep a copy of your estimate for your records.
